In our standard screen printing service we use plastisol ink for our t-shirt printing Tulsa. This is the tried and true ink that has been used in apparel screen printing for decades. Plastisol really started to dominate apparel screen printing in the early 70s. It offers a durable, vivid print that will last for years on your garment. Plastisol is very versatile screen printing ink as well. With the proper use of certain additives, plastisol can have a very soft feel, and can be printed on finicky materials such as vinyl and spandex. Special effects, such as puff ink and foil decorations, are also available when using plastisol ink.
Plastisol is a thermoplastic ink, which means that it must be heated to a high temperature, usually between 200 and 320 degrees, to properly adhere to fabric. This is a consideration when deciding what fabric your garments are made of. They should be able to endure the heat curing without discoloration or distortion.
One trap that we’ve seen many people run into when choosing a traditional plastisol print is making the design “bulletproof.” This means that the t-shirt design has been created to be large and have no areas where the shirt fabric can be seen within the design. A large, opaque design using plastisol ink can have issues with comfort, because it traps heat and moisture against the wearers skin.
We can help you avoid these pitfalls with our design services or with the use of other inks, such as water based and discharge inks.
We’ll cover those options below.
Water-based screen printing inks were the primary inks used in garment printing before the 1970s. There has been a resurgence in water-based screen t-shirt printing Tulsa ink recently. Water-based inks are eco-friendly and easily cleaned using water, rather than chemical solvents.
One advantage of water-based inks in apparel t-shirt printing Tulsa is comfort. When applied to a t-shirt, for example, the ink feels lighter on the shirt than plastisol. It also feels softer to the touch. New water-based ink are also able to achieve a more vibrant color than the inks in the past. Because water-based ink absorbs into the garment, the colors will generally look less opaque than plastisol inks, which usually sits on top of the fabric.
Water-based inks are cured by water evaporation. After the ink has evaporated, what is left is the pigment from the ink that is soaked into the garment. These inks work best on 100% cotton garments, because of the absorption quality of cotton. Poly blend garments can also be printed but will look less opaque than cotton garments.
If you are looking for a vintage look and feel to your custom t-shirts, water-based inks on a poly blend shirt is a great option. A retro look comes naturally to this combo.
If you’ve felt a black t-shirt and the design printed on the shirt feels exactly the same as the shirt fabric, that’s likely a discharge ink print.
Discharge ink works by “bleaching” the shirt color out of the shirt and replacing it with the ink color. The ink discharges the ink from the shirt.
This type of t-shirt printing Tulsa only works on 100% cotton garments, and only on dark colors. Some dark shirt colors work better than others. Royal blue and purple can be troublesome for discharge inks.
The major advantage of using a discharge ink is the color-fastness and soft feel of the print. The design is set into the fabric and will not ever wash out. It’s a part of the shirt now. The fact that the ink has re-colored the t-shirt fabric, rather than sitting on top, means that the design will be as comfortable and treatable as the fabric itself.
Some great shirts can be designed and printed using the discharge process.
